Gus Nelson Auto-calibration is generally a bad idea because:
Auto-calibration matches the foot pod's pace/distance against GPS's pace and distance. GPS's accuracy can be good and it can be bad.
If the watch chooses good GPS results, the auto-calibration result can be good! Stryd's absolute accuracy can be improved.
If the watch choose bad GPS results, the auto-calibration result can be bad. Stryd's absolute accuracy becomes worse.
However, you don't know if your watch selected a good OR a bad result. So, you don't know if the accuracy became better or worse.
Additionally, some watches (I am not sure if the Suunto watches are in this camp) will change the auto-calibration result over time. So, now the accuracy can be shifting between good and bad.
So, auto-calibration essentially adds randomness to Stryd's absolute accuracy as a result of the randomness of GPS's accuracy.
While Stryd may not be perfectly absolute accurate, it is usually pretty accurate in the absolute sense and it is very consistent.
You are better off keeping Stryd's consistency intact by turning auto-calibration off rather than add a layer of randomness in from auto-calibration that will destroy Stryd's consistency.
